STEMORA: Turning Personal Experiences Into Confidence Through Health Education

Written by Eileen Parnami, founder of STEMORA and BRITE Youth Advocate Leader.

Growing up, I experienced moments where I did not always feel confident in my own skin. Like many teenagers, I saw how changes in your skin can affect the way you view yourself. Something as common as acne can become more than just a health concern - it can affect confidence, self-esteem, and the way students feel in their everyday lives.

As I learned more about skin health, I realized that many students experience similar challenges but do not always have access to accurate information or a place where they feel comfortable asking questions. I wanted to create something that reminded students that they are not alone, that their experiences are valid, and that understanding their health can help them feel more confident.

That is where the idea for STEMORA began.

STEMORA was created to empower young people through accessible health education and STEM opportunities, with a focus on skin health, adolescent wellness, and building confidence. I wanted to combine my passion for STEM and healthcare with my desire to help students feel more informed and supported.

During Summer 2026, STEMORA hosted a series of youth-led workshops focused on Teen Acne, Celiac Disease, and Women in STEM. These workshops created a space where students could learn about important health topics, participate in discussions, and connect science to their own experiences.

The Teen Acne Workshop was especially meaningful because acne is something many teenagers experience, but it is often associated with insecurity and misinformation. Through educational resources, interactive activities, and conversations, students learned about the science behind acne, healthy skincare habits, and the importance of confidence beyond appearance.

Throughout the summer, I saw how powerful it can be when students are given information that connects directly to their lives. A health workshop is not just about teaching facts; it is about creating a space where students feel heard, supported, and empowered.

Everything below was created and led by students during STEMORA’s first year. Although STEMORA started with a small team and one idea, it grew into opportunities for students to learn about health, STEM, and confidence.

  • 40+ students reached through STEMORA health education and advocacy efforts

  • 4 health and STEM workshops hosted, creating opportunities for students to learn and engage with important topics

  • 1 student-led health summit focused on bringing awareness and education to youth

  • 4 educational resources created to make health information more accessible and engaging for students

These numbers represent more than just events and activities. They represent students who were able to learn, ask questions, and feel more confident about their health and future.

As STEMORA continues to grow, I hope to expand STEMORA through more health education workshops, opportunities, student-led STEMORA clubs, and partnerships with healthcare professionals and organizations. My goal is to reach more students and continue creating opportunities where young people feel confident exploring their health and their future.

Through this journey, I learned that sometimes the experiences that challenge us can become the reason we create change. What started as a personal connection to confidence and health has grown into an opportunity to support other students and remind them that they are more than their insecurities.

STEMORA is a reminder that knowledge creates confidence, and confidence can inspire change.
