We see a painting of a beautiful beach with rolling blue waves, golden sand, and a blue sky with white clouds. There are footprints in the sand. It gives a sense of peace.

Water’s Face

anxiety mental health resilience substance abuse Sep 10, 2025

Writing and painting by Sierra Watson.

I wonder how calm water feels;

All gathered as I looked upon its face.

I’m sure it wonders if it’s real,

With its surface reflecting another space.

I wonder how still water craves,

while reflecting another environment.

Without ripples and without waves

It carries a whole world inside of it.

I’m sorry pond, I’m sorry lake

If you feel you’re known for another place.

How often do we feel invisible or misunderstood? Each morning, we step into the world carrying our own fears and anxieties. Discovering who we truly are isn’t always easy, but it is one of the most important journeys we can take as human beings.

That journey becomes even harder when our minds are clouded. Substances may seem to offer freedom, but it’s a false freedom. They don’t reveal your authentic self; they mask it, creating a reflection that doesn’t truly belong to you.

When you don’t know who you are, the world will try to decide for you. And that’s the last place you want to find your identity. The real truth is within. When you look inward, with a clear mind and an open heart, you will discover who you were meant to be.

I try not to rush this process and know it will come in time. When we realize everyone is in the constant state of becoming, we can drop our shoulders a little bit. There is no deadline on “being.” With every exciting experience and new opportunity, you’ll find pieces of yourself along the way. The most important thing to remember is this: you, and only you, get to decide who you are and who you will become and substances only bring confusion.
