Fun Writing Prompts

Fun

We invite you to find a prompt that sparks something within you, and then get to writing! You may write however you feel comfortable and open. Some people enjoy dimming the lights, or finding a quiet, comfortable, and peaceful place to focus. There are no rules to this practice, but perhaps setting an alarm for 20 or 30 minutes would be a nice place to start. As you continue with your practice, you will find ways to adjust and create your perfect individual experience.

While BRITE WRITE is a gift just for you, we have found that by sharing their work, some students have found the experience to be more impactful and empowering. If you choose to submit your work to us, please do so using the form below. We would love to publish you on our blog!

Prompt #11: Greatest Gift Given/Received There are many ways to enrich our lives through meaningful gestures. Something as small as giving or receiving a gift can have a huge memorable impact on someone. Sometimes, gift exchanging happens during holiday celebrations, where one might look forward to expected gifts. Perhaps you can give or receive a gift totally be out of the blue. Gifts also can come in many forms: material possessions or the gift of your time and energy. When you give or receive a gift that is meaningful, it creates a fond memory that your brain stores. We would like to hear about a memorable gift in your life and how it impacted you. How did it feel to give/receive something? What was its significance to you? What makes it so memorable? In your experience, do you enjoy the feeling of giving or receiving gifts more?

Prompt #12: Heroes When you think of a hero, who or what comes to mind first? A hero makes an impactful difference in the world. Maybe you think of someone with superpowers who risks their life to save a person in need, or perhaps you are thinking of real-life heroes of the past or of today. When you think of the qualities of a superhero -- qualities such as fighting for justice, helping out the everyday person or making a positive difference in someone's life-- it’s important to realize that those traits can be found in heroes that are just like us. Martin Luther King was a hero of his time fighting for the equality of Black people in society, and Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez founded the National Farmworkers Association, which regulated safety and sanitary conditions in farm labor camps, and banned discrimination in employment and sexual harassment of women workers. Another hero can be someone you look up to like a parent, guardian, caretaker, or social activist. Heroes can also be doctors, nurses, and people working on the front lines, helping to save lives. Who is a hero of yours? What qualities do we see in a hero that we may also possess?

Prompt #13: New Year's Resolutions When a new year begins, it brings a fresh start and perhaps even a new version of ourselves to the forefront of our lives. Many people feel that this gives us an opportunity to create new goals and better ourselves. A New Year’s resolution can look different for everybody. The goal is to find something that you can improve in your life and work towards bettering yourself. It's important that the goal you set is something that is obtainable. A resolution can look like trying to eat healthier or contributing more to family. It can also be reading in your free time or learning a new skill. What changes are you looking forward to making for your New Year's resolution? Is it something that is difficult or will it come easy to you? How does your resolution affect the people around you?

Prompt #14: Books, Books, Books Pirates, Cowboys, Crusaders, Vikings, Vampires, Werewolves, OH MY! Open a book, and maybe you'll see characters like these. You might encounter a person who hasn't felt joy in forever; you might encounter a recovering addict, a thriving prodigy, a mystical time wizard, a sick child, or a cheerful celebration. The magical thing is this: stories are infinite. When something is infinite, it’s timeless, and when something is timeless, it automatically becomes a treasure. Alice In Wonderland, Of Mice and Men, Frankenstein-- every book is special to someone. Which book is your favorite? Can you share a line from the book which speaks to your daily life? Who is your favorite fictional character? What genres do you like to read? Have you ever read a story that reminded you of yourself? A loved one? Someone you'd like to know? We just threw a lot at you. Find a question that sparks your interest and curiosity, and fall down that rabbit hole!

Prompt #15: Supernatural Ghosts, goblins, and ghouls. If you're a history lover, perhaps you'll know that even the most famous dead folks have been reported lurking around every corner. It is said that Lincoln walks the white house, Marilyn Monroe still haunts her hotel room, and it’s rumored that Anne Boleyn, the 2nd of six wives of King Henry, still spends time in the tower of London, where she died almost five centuries ago. Do you have a ghost story as terrifying as these? Have you seen something that has gone bump in the night? Do you believe in the existence of the supernatural? This week, we’re writing spooky stories. If you haven't had a strange encounter, make one up! We wanna sleep with our eyes open tonight.
